The market's doing something interesting today, and by interesting I mean predictable. Nifty Gateway, once the darling of the NFT boom, just announced it's pulling the plug. Come February 23, the Gemini-owned platform enters withdrawal-only mode. That's crypto speak for "game over, please collect your stuff."
Remember 2021? When everyone and their grandmother was flipping JPEGs for thousands of dollars? Nifty Gateway was right there at the center of it all, hosting drops from Beeple, Pak, and countless other digital artists. Fast forward to 2026, and it's joining the long list of NFT platforms that couldn't survive the reality check.
Here's what gets me - this isn't some random startup running out of VC money. This is backed by the Winklevoss twins' Gemini exchange. If they're throwing in the towel on NFTs, that tells you everything about where this market stands. Trading volumes have been anemic for years now. Most collections are down 90% or more from their peaks.
The platform gave users plenty of notice, which is more than you can say for some crypto projects. But still, watching another major player exit the NFT space feels like watching the final episodes of a show that should've ended two seasons ago.
What's left of the NFT market will likely consolidate around a few survivors. OpenSea's still kicking, somehow. But for those hoping NFTs would revolutionize art, gaming, and everything else? Well, that dream's looking pretty pixelated right about now.
